iSocket Systems announces today that it has been named Q3 winner of the Thread Group’s Innovation Enabler Program 2015 – a quarterly initiative that provides early-stage companies with creative potential the opportunity to play a role in defining the connected home. The new project of the company – CECO HOME – was presented to Thread Group as the new ecosystem for cellular connected homes.

Industry experts have predicted that by 2020 there will be greater than a one trillion dollar market for IoT and IoT enabled services. According to Gartner there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. Gartner had positioned IoT in the peak in the Gartner Hype Cycle (2014).

Currently one of the primary challenges of Home Automation and the bigger umbrella of IoT, is lack of standardization in networking protocol as well as technology stack.

Google known for their innovation in search, mobile and web technologies wanted to disrupt the silo that existed in home automation space. They proposed an open and standard set of protocols for home automation called Thread. Thread is an IP based wireless networking protocol designed for low-power connected products in home automation space. Thread would allow all the devices in your home to communicate with one another without any hassle. Thread is designed for all home automation products including appliances, access control, climate control, energy management, lighting and safety.

IHS forecasts that connected home device shipments will grow from 59 million units in 2015 to 193 million units in 2018, a compounded annual growth rate of more than 48 percent. Silicon Labs created cost-effective reference designs to significantly reduce the complexity of connecting ZigBee devices, such as lights, dimmer switches and door/window contact sensors, in a connected home network.

Thread Group Launches Certification Program As Osram Joins Board Of Directors

The Thread Group, which develops the Thread mesh networking protocol for connected homes, launched its certification, and more than 30 products have already been submitted for testing. The Thread specification version 1.0 was released earlier this summer.

Now that the full specification was released and the Thread Group is starting to certify devices for the protocol, we should start seeing Thread-enabled devices in the market in a matter of months. Certified software stacks from ARM, Freescale and Silicon Labs should already be available this month.

Linux’s domination of home automation gizmos continues

The Linux-dominated home automation business is still a fragmented free-for-all, but its also beginning to consolidate, with far fewer startups in 2015 compared to recent years.This month we saw several major product announcements from established players related to Linux. First, Googles Nest Labs announced the first device partners for its Weave home automation protocol using the Thread networking standard. Now Samsung, which began shipping its first Linux-based SmartThings hub last month, released a $249 sensor kit built around the hub. Meanwhile, in the larger Internet of Things world that includes industrial, as well as home automation, the Linux Foundations AllSeen Alliance announced a new certification program and security stack. In addition, Amazon unveiled an AWS IoT cloud platform available with starter kits based on Linux hacker boards (see below).

Nest Exposes ‘Weave’ Home Automation Protocol, Opens Camera API, Plans World Domination

Google-owned Nest has made two important announcements that will further its mission to owning the smart home. First, Nest is sharing its proprietary, mesh-enabled Weave home automation protocol that allows devices to intercommunicate locally without the Internet. Second, Nest is finally opening up the API for its IP camera.
