Nortek, whose businesses include residential A/V and home-automation brands, considered but spurned an unsolicited offer to be purchased, the company acknowledged. The financially ailing public company said that after receiving the unsolicited proposal, its board and advisers commenced a review of strategic alternatives.

That review is now complete, and all discussions in relation to this proposal have now ended, the company said. There have been rumors in the press that have created a distraction for us, said president/CEO Michael Clarke.

Nortek, which owns a slate of audio, video, security and home automation brands, is reportedly in talks to be acquired by United Technologies Corp., the conglomerate that owns Interlogix. At times today, NTK stock has surpassed its 52-week high of $89.9, spiking at $93. She currently spends most of her time writing for CE Pro in the areas of home automation, security, networked A/V and the business of home systems integration.

Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal reported the news today that UTC (as it is popularly known) is “in talks to buy Nortek” but “It is unclear where talks between United Technologies and Nortek stand or what price is being discussed. As with all such discussions, they may not lead to a deal.”
